Finding the Right Music

For my music video, and to avoid copyright infringement, I am going to use a source of non-copyright music for my project.

I used www.unsigned.com, I chose this website as there are plenty of genres which I can choose from.

I am going to contact the artist via email, left on their unsigned.com profile page.

In my email I need to give them information about who I am and my intentions with their song. I need to emphasise that it is part of my A2 Media project and that it will be non-profitable. In addition that we enjoy their track and it has inspired us to create a music video around it.

Me and partner, Ashleigh,  have came up with a draft which we would use to contact our desired artist:

Dear Sir or Madam,
>
> We are writing this Email in regards to asking permission to use ___________ which we found on unsigned.com. This willl be for our media studies project at Robert Clack School, in the UK. It is for a music video project that is compulsory as part of our completion of the course. The video will be purposely for our school project and will be non-profitable. It's not for commercial use and will not be re-duplicated on DVD. It will, however, be placed onto YouTube to allow us to upload it onto our school blogs.
>
> We want to use this song because we love it so much. It had insipred us to create a video around this song. We respect ___ as an artist and would feel so privileged if ___ would grant us permission to use ___beautiful track as a basis for our project.
>
> If you have any questions which you would like to ask about our school project, please feel free to email back.
>
> In order for us to be able to proceed with making our video, we need to receive written permission from you to produce the video.
>
> Thank you for taking the time to read this email, we would be really grateful if you could get back to us at your earliest convenience.
>
> Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
>
> Kind regards,
>
> Ashleigh Westcott and Nnenna Anadi

We will use this draft to ask permission to use the artists track.

Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U

Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U.

The music video, mostly consists of close up shots of Sinead, and a few clips of statues of in
Paris and her walking around.

Nothing Compares 2U is a cover of a song, that was unsuccessful in the charts and Sinead herself was not well known. However the music video, helped sell the albums and build herself in the music industry.

In the music video, we can see the anguish on Sinead's face, as her mum had recently passed away. We see her emotion, when she sings as a tear rolls down her face, we see that she is deeply moved by the song.

Non Copyright Music

Copyright refers to the legal concept, giving the creator of the original work exclusive rights usually for a limited time.

Copyright can protect:
  • literary works,
  • dramatic works
  • musical works
  • artistic works
  • layouts or typographical arrangements
  • recordings
  • broadcasts

Copyright is important because to creators like writers and artists as well as those such as publishers that own rights, as it provides them with a legal right of ownership of the work that they produce. It prevents others duplicating their work and claiming ownership.

There are problems and issues it might create during my project as the song used would not be mine, this means that I would be breaking the law.

This is why it is important for myself to use unsigned artist, from sources such as www.unsigned.com, because it means that I would not be breaking copyright right rules, as many of them are are unsigned therefore copyright laws do not apply to them.

However, I still need to ask permission to use their recordings.

The above information was found at www.wikepedia.com, www.ipo.gov.uk  and schools.cla.co.uk

Favourite Music Video

I chose The Script- The Man Who Can't be Moved, as my favourite music.

They are an alternative rock band originated from Ireland. They are well known, especially the lead singer, Danny, who is involved in The Voice UK.

Key conventions of a genre are present in the music video. It cuts back to the bandmates playing instruments, and I believe that there are lip synching by the lead singer.

I believe the video effectively conveys the mood of the song, as it literally explains the meaning of the song. It doesn't use complex, high technologies but rather it shows simplicity throughout the whole song. The song itself is rather simple, with no exaggerated autotune, which is reflected by the music video.
